Pittsburgh, PA was named one of the 10 best places to retire in 2012 according to U.S. News and World Report (http://money.usnews.com/money/retirement/articles/2011/10/17/the-10-best-places-to-retire-in-2012?PageNr=2 ). Pittsburgh’s low cost of living is attractive for Seniors and there are plenty of amenities that retirees will need as they get older. There are plenty of top-rated hospitals, doctors, Patio Homes, continuing care housing options, and seniors age 65 or over can ride the Port Authority buses and trains free at all times. Hop the bus to town and take in a ballet, symphony or even a Pirate, Steeler or Penguin game.

Home prices are affordable too with the median home sale price below the national average (less than $150,000 in 2011). David Crowe, the National Association of Home Builder’s chief economist, said that Pittsburgh was among the top two largest improving housing markets in the country. The city has also shown improvements in housing permits, employment and housing prices for at least six months. So, while Pittsburgh made the list for the best mix of affordability and amenities, I didn’t see the weather mentioned anywhere. Why not have the best of all worlds and buy a home in Florida (at a great price) for the winter months and avoid the grey, snowy days of winter.
