Cranberry Township Information

Cranberry Township lies in the southwestern corner of Butler County, Pennsylvania, about 20 miles north of downtown Pittsburgh. Cranberry Township was incorporated in 1804 and covers an area of approximately 23.69 square miles. The population and area is continually growing with about 28,000+ residents. Part of the reason for the phenomenal growth is the opening of Interstate 279 in 1989 which enabled commuters to downtown Pittsburgh to cut their travel time to 30 minutes or less. Cranberry Township is also conveniently located at the intersection of the Pennsylvania Turnpike (I76), Interstate 79, and Routes 19 and 228. Accessibility is also a great advantage to businesses located in the area and in the Thorn Hill Industrial Park.

Residential construction accounted for nearly $400 million between 1996 and 2005 and when commercial construction is added in, that 10 year figure exceeds $1 billion. In 2005, the median home sale price was $216,000 with 79% of Cranberry’s residents owning their own home. In 2009, 442 homes sold in Cranberry township with the median home sale price being $236,500 and the average sales price being $268,968.

There are an abundance of restaurants and shopping centers along Route 19 in Cranberry Township and along the Route 228 corridor. Large chain stores such as Wal-mart, Target and Kohls and home stores such as Lowe’s and Home Depot are only minutes away. Dine at Bravo’s, Olive Garden , Primanti Brothers, Red Robin, Moe’s or any fast food restaurant you can think of.

In addition to convenient shopping, playgrounds are numerous throughout the area and include:

Community Park: was recently expanded to 96 acres and was Cranberry’s first major community park. Located off Route 10, behind the Park Fire Station, the park has 4 picnic shelters, 4 lighted tennis courts, 2 sand volleyball courts, 5 lighted baseball fields, 1 lighted football field with bleachers, Children’s Playtime Palace Playground, Amphitheater with covered stage and grassy seating area, Basketball Court, and Rotary Dog Park (off leash run area for dogs).

North Boundary Park: consists of 128 acres east of Route 19 off North Boundary Road. It offers 2 picnic shelters, private sun decks, American legion baseball field, 3 soccer fields, playground area, sledding hill, walking path and a Water Park with concession stand.

Graham Park: consists of 119 acres and was purchased in 2004 and opened in May of 2009. Located at 260 Graham Park Road, the Park is on the westbound side of Rochester Road. There are 13 lighted fields (tournament level play in all major field sports), 2.5 miles of paved bicycle and walking trails, food concessions and restrooms and more.

Cranberry Skate Park: built on a 120 x 80 foot pad of polished concrete provided by a local supplier, this park features ramps, rails, steps, platforms and benches provided by a grant from the American Eagle Outfitters Foundation and the national organization, KaBoom. The park is free and open for unsupervised use by skateboarders, in-line skaters and BMX bike riders.

There are summer concerts scheduled throughout the summer months at the Cranberry Rotary Amphitheater in Community Park as well as activities and programs for children scheduled through the Parks and Recreation Department. In addition, the Cranberry Highland Golf Course is a public golf course with a 186 acre, par 70 golf course with 70 separate tee areas, sand bunkers and water hazards. In 2009, Golf Digest named Highlands the #1 Municipal Course in Pennsylvania.
